Etsy Account Suspension: Reasons, Rules and How Appeals Work

What Etsy's own Terms, Seller Policy and help pages say about suspended accounts, removed listings and appeals, and which Etsy entity and law govern the contract.

The short answer

Etsy may suspend or terminate an account, and any accounts it determines are related, if it has reason to believe the seller, the seller's content or the use of the services violates its Terms of Use or Seller Policy. A temporary suspension, for example for an unpaid bill or an unfinished bank verification, usually ends when the seller fixes the issue. A permanent suspension can be appealed once, in Etsy's Appeals Center, within 6 months of the suspension, and the answer is final.

At a glance

  • Etsy's email states whether the suspension is temporary or permanent. A permanent suspension is labelled "permanently suspended" in the subject line and body.
  • Common causes of temporary suspension are an overdue balance, a missing taxpayer ID, an unfinished bank or identity verification and, for sellers outside the U.S., missing the 60-day bank verification deadline.
  • Items must be made, designed, handpicked or sourced by the seller. Drop shipping and reselling are not allowed, except for craft and party supplies, vintage items over 20 years old and a few other cases. A production partner must be disclosed.
  • Repeat or multiple intellectual property notices can end selling privileges, and Etsy may refuse services to a member who opens a new shop after termination.
  • A removed listing has its own appeal: up to 6 months to file, one appeal per listing, and a denial is final for that listing.

Temporary or permanent: read the email first

Etsy's help center separates two situations. A temporary suspension can be resolved by other means, such as paying an overdue balance or resolving open cases, and Etsy's email will usually say what to do. A permanent suspension is marked as such, and an appeal is the only formal route.

Etsy usually emails the reason and the steps to resolve it, and the seller may also see a banner in the Shop Manager dashboard. Check the spam folder. An email that asks "why" is not an appeal.

Causes of temporary suspension that Etsy lists

Etsy's page on reinstating an account lists these, each with its own fix:

  • an overdue bill, which reinstates the account soon after payment;
  • a missing taxpayer ID for U.S. sellers above a sales threshold;
  • a missing bank account for sellers outside the U.S., which Etsy asks them to add shortly after the first sale;
  • unfinished bank account verification, or repeated failed verification attempts;
  • problems verifying identity, where Etsy may request more information;
  • a missed legally required confirmation of seller information, which puts the shop into vacation mode until it is confirmed;
  • repeated policy violations after Etsy has warned the seller.

Bank verification for sellers outside the U.S.

Etsy's help page says non-U.S. sellers usually have 30 days to begin bank verification and 60 days to complete it after opening the shop, and that verification starts after the first sale. If the seller reaches the maximum number of attempts or misses the 60-day deadline, the shop is suspended. The name on the bank account must match the legal and tax details given when the shop was opened.

If a small test deposit does not work or the currencies differ, Etsy asks for a bank document that is printed on the bank's letterhead, is less than 6 months old and shows the full account details. Etsy says it usually reviews a document within about 5 to 7 business days.

What the Terms of Use say about termination

Section 7 of the Terms says Etsy may terminate or suspend an account, and any accounts it determines are related to it, when it has reason to believe the user, the user's content or the user's use of the services violates the Terms. The Terms add that the user has no contractual or legal right to continue to use the services, and that Etsy will generally notify the user unless the user has repeatedly violated the Terms or legal or regulatory reasons prevent notice.

The Seller Policy adds that Etsy may limit the visibility of a shop, listings or ads, or place restrictions or reserves on the payment account, when it sees unusual order activity, missed service standards or a risk of disputes, chargebacks, fraud or counterfeiting.

Selling rules that matter most

The Seller Policy and Etsy's help pages set these rules.

  • Everything listed must be made, designed, handpicked or sourced by the seller. Reselling is not allowed, and neither is drop shipping, except for craft and party supplies, vintage items over 20 years old and themed gift baskets the seller assembles.
  • A production partner, including a print-on-demand service, is allowed when the item is the seller's original design or a buyer's customization, and the partner must be disclosed in the listing.
  • Sellers must use their own photos or video, and disclose items created with artificial intelligence.
  • Sellers must give honest information, may not create duplicate shops or manipulate search, and may not facilitate off-platform transactions.
  • Orders shipped to the U.S. must use a Delivery Duty Paid method.
  • When a buyer reports a problem, the seller has 48 hours to resolve it before the buyer can open a case.

Intellectual property complaints

Etsy removes material on a report that complies with its policy, and it says it cannot make legal determinations about infringement. It accepts DMCA counter notices only for U.S.-based copyright reports. After a counter notice is processed, the removed material may be restored after 10 business days unless the complainant files a court action or a qualifying Copyright Claims Board action and tells Etsy.

Under the Intellectual Property Policy, Etsy terminates selling privileges of members who are subject to repeat or multiple notices, in appropriate circumstances. If Etsy believes a member opened a new shop after termination, it may refuse all services to that member, and these actions can reach any accounts it believes are associated with the member. Only the rights owner or its representative can withdraw a report, and a withdrawal does not necessarily change the shop status.

Appealing a permanent suspension

Etsy allows one appeal after the issues are resolved. The deadline is 6 months from the day of the suspension, and an account that misses it stays suspended. The steps, from Etsy's help page:

  1. Resolve open cases and unpaid balances, and check that no listing breaks the Prohibited Items Policy, the Creativity Standards or the Intellectual Property Policy.
  2. Open the Appeals Center and sign in to the suspended account.
  3. Choose the reason for the appeal and describe what the seller did to fix the problem.
  4. Explain how the seller's practices will change if access is restored, and attach supporting documents.
  5. Submit. Etsy says a decision can take up to two weeks. Filing does not mean the account will be reinstated, and a denial means no further consideration.

Appealing a removed listing

A listing removed by Etsy can be appealed from the Policy violations page, if the violation type allows it. Unless Etsy states otherwise, the seller has up to 6 months from the removal, and each listing needs its own appeal. For Creativity Standards removals, the seller can attach up to 12 photos, videos or documents that show how the item is made, designed, curated or sourced. A video of the finished item alone is not enough. Etsy says most reviews finish within 3 days, with some taking 10 to 12 business days. A denied appeal cannot be repeated for the same listing, and multiple violations can lead to account suspension.

Which Etsy entity and which law

The version of the Terms displayed on 3 November 2026 says a new version takes effect on 16 December 2026, so read the version in force when a dispute arises. In the displayed version, the contract is with Etsy, Inc. for sellers in North and South America, with an arbitration agreement and class action waiver, subject to the opt-out and exceptions in the Terms. For sellers elsewhere in the world, the contract is with Etsy Ireland UC, governed by Irish law and decided in the courts of Ireland, with exceptions for consumers and for sellers in Australia.

Most suspensions are decided inside Etsy's appeal process, so the quality of the appeal and of the records behind it matters more than the dispute clause.

Etsy Account Suspension: Reasons, Rules and How Appeals Work: questions people ask

Why do Etsy accounts get suspended?

Etsy's pages list overdue bills, missing tax or bank information, unfinished identity or bank verification, repeated policy violations, intellectual property reports and policy breaches such as reselling or off-platform transactions. Etsy may also suspend accounts it determines are related to a suspended account.

How long do I have to appeal a permanent Etsy suspension?

Six months from the day of the suspension, according to Etsy's help page. If the seller misses that window, the account stays suspended. Etsy says a decision can take up to two weeks and is final.

Is a temporary Etsy suspension the same as a permanent one?

No. A temporary suspension can usually be resolved by fixing the cause, such as paying a balance or finishing verification. A permanent suspension is stated in Etsy's email and can only be challenged through the Appeals Center.

Can I open a new Etsy shop after a permanent suspension?

Etsy's Intellectual Property Policy says it may refuse all services to a member who opens a new shop after termination. The Seller Policy also bars duplicate shops. A seller in this position can ask Merit Law LLP in Houston to review the suspension notice before taking any step.

What changed: moved from the firm's earlier blog and rewritten from Etsy's own Seller Policy, Terms of Use, Intellectual Property Policy and help pages, read on 3 November 2026. Removed the statistic about 1.2 million closed listings and thousands of deactivated accounts in 2023, the statements that matching IP addresses, a VPN or shared Wi-Fi trigger a ban, and the "zero tolerance" label for certain policies (Etsy's pages do not say these); replaced the "Handmade Policy" with Etsy's current Creativity Standards (made, designed, handpicked or sourced); and removed the statements about the firm reinstating Etsy accounts and the closing offer of legal help, which are not allowed in attorney advertising. Added the temporary and permanent suspension routes, the 6-month appeal deadline, the listing appeal and the contracting entity.
